India's most efficient solar panel for India's biggest employer: Indian Railways

Indian Railways has long been on the drive to reduce their carbon footprint investing in conventional solar PV technologies for their railway platforms. Indian railways has running rooms at every station where the guards, TT, loco pilots rest and refresh between their trips. These buildings have both electricity and hot water requirements. Indian Railways needed an innovative solution that can give them a complete solution for electricity and hot water requirements. Running rooms at Nampally had a requirement of 5kW and 1,000LPD of hot water and only had 400 sq. ft of roof to space. Meeting the requirement of 5kW & 1,000LPD with in 400 sq. ft is impossible with any existing technologies.

Birds Eye Energy's innovative, patented technology of 'Duplex Solar panels' were the solution that would solve this problem by delivering 5kW and 1,000LPD hot water with in 400 sq. ft space. Below is the detailed project report.


Challenges for roof top solar system for running rooms:

◆ Roof top space shortage: Only 400 sq. ft of roof top area was available to deliver 5kW and 1000LPD; this is impossible with ordinary PV and solar hot water technologies.

◆ Durability issues with ordinary hot water systems: In the past Indian Railways has opted for hot water systems such as ETC or FPC, but both these systems fail and start leaking within a few years and eventually fall into dis-use.

◆ Frequent replacements: Water heaters have a short life time 5 - 10 years and Indian Railways has to go through the tedious administrative and technical procedure to install a new system frequently.

◆ Quest for innovation: Indian Railways has long been on the quest to reduce their carbon footprint and have been looking for innovative technologies to promote; but most technologies that exist in the market are outdated technologies.

Birds Eye Energy has developed a unique 'Duplex' solar panel. Our 'Duplex' panel is the same size as a standard panel (1m X 2m), and has two layers; the top layer of the panel produces DC power (330W) and the bottom layer generates hot water (100LPD). This makes the Birds Eye Energy's Duplex panel the most efficient solar panel in India, with an overall efficiency of upto 40%!

'Duplex' solar panel is a patented product developed by Birds Eye Energy in collaboration with IIT Madras.

Project details:

Within 400 sq. ft of space, 15 Birds Eye Energy 'Duplex' panels were installed. With each panel supplying 330W of power, the 15 panels combined, deliver the 5kW of power. With each 'Duplex' panel capable of delivering 100L of hot water, the total capacity of the system is 1500LPD. As per the requirement only a 1,000L system was installed, giving the customer a flexibility of increasing the hot water capacity with minimal changes to the system.


Electrical architecture:

The system consists of 2 strings; first string of 7 panels and second string of 8 panels. Both these strings were connected in parallel to a Delta inverter rated for 5kW.



Plumbing architecture:

The first string of 7 panels are connected to a 500L tank which supplies hot water to the kitchen. The second string of 8 panels are connected to another 500L tank which supplies hot water to the bathrooms.

Drain valves and unions are provided at appropriate locations to drain the system and perform maintenance as needed.

◆ Roof top space shortage issue solved by duplex panels: 15 duplex panels take up only 400 sq. ft of space to install. With each panel capable of delivering 330W and 100 LPD of hot water, the requirement of 5kW and 1,000LPD hot water was met using merely 400 sq. ft

◆ Durability issues solved by robust engineering of duplex panels: Birds Eye Energy duplex panels are built with 2X thicker flow passages than ordinary hot water panels; are tested to withstand 8 bar pressure and are designed to last 25 years. The panels also come with 20 year warranty.

◆ Frequent replacement issue solved due to long life time of Duplex panels: Birds Eye Energy's duplex panels are designed to have a long life of 25 years; eliminating the need for frequent replacements.

Oyo Hotel

Project details:

Oyo Hotels at Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad was facing a massive challenge of high electricity bills. They were looking for innovative green energy technology to maximize savings from the limited roof top space of 500 sq. ft. The initially installed traditional hot water system had presented durability challenges. Also, traditional solar panels with a limited roof top space could not satisfy the peak energy demand. Birds Eye Energy's 'Duplex panel', was the perfect solution to meet the hotel's electricity demand. Even with the limited rooftop space, Birds Eye Energy was able to meet the customers' needs by installing 15 solar panels that produce 4.5kW of electric power and 1500 litres of hot water per day.


Challenges for roof top solar system:

◆ Roof top space shortage: Only 500 sq. ft roof top space available.

◆ Durability issues with ordinary hot water systems: Previous hot water systems that OYO had installed resulted in a failure with leakage in 2 years and has since been dysfunctional.

◆ Quest for innovation: Utility bills was one of the biggest expenses for OYO. Hence, OYO was looking for innovative technologies to maximize the savings from their limited roof top space.


Birds Eye Energy Duplex panel solution:

◆ Shortage of roof top space solved by Duplex panels: Birds Eye Energy's 'Duplex' system only took up 450 sq. ft of space. This system simultaneously delivers 4.5kW and up to 1500LPD of hot water from a single system.

◆ Lack of durability solved by robust design: Birds Eye Energy's duplex solar panels are built with 2X thicker flow passages to avoid leakages, reduce scaling, can withstand up to 8 bar pressure and are designed to last 25 years.

◆ Maximization of savings: Using ordinary PV system or ordinary hot water system, OYO could save only 16 -24 units per day from 450 sq. ft of space. Whereas by using Birds Eye Energy's duplex solar energy system, OYO has saved about 50 units per day.


Plumbing architecture:

The 15 Duplex panels used in this project are connected to a 1500L solar water tank. A pump is used for efficient circulation of the water through the panels which helps in optimal heating. The water from the solar water tank is supplied to the hotel bathrooms.

Drain valves and unions are provided at appropriate locations to drain the system and perform maintenance as needed.



Electrical architecture:

The system consists of two strings, first string consists of 7 panels and the second string consists of 8 panels. The total electrical output is 4.5kW.



Project energy and financial savings:

Below table lists the average daily electricity and thermal output generation from the Duplex solar panel. In the months of June, July and August, the total daily electricity savings from the 4.5kW + 1500L system installed for OYO hotel was in the range of 45-50 kWh.

Given the energy savings mentioned above, below graph shows the financial savings that the Birds Eye Energy's Duplex Panel generates over the period of its life in comparison to the traditional solar energy systems available in the market. Duplex solar panels can generate Rs. 47 lakhs savings over the period of 25 years. In comparison to the traditional systems like hot water panels, PV panels, Heat pumps, the Duplex panels can save upto Rs 28 to 34 lakhs more for a system size of 4.5kW + 1500L.

Let me start with sharing some details on the 2 conventional solar technologies:

Conventional Panels

Some of the limitations of the above systems are explained below:

◆ Solar Photo Voltaic (PV) panels: PV solar panels convert the incident sunlight directly into electric energy (electricity). While this helps to generate free electricity, the efficiency of solar PV panels is quite low. The main drawback of PV solar panels is that the efficiency of these panels is quite low. Hence these systems usually occupy a lot of roof top aera and have long pay back periods.

◆ Solar hot water heaters (SWH): Solar hot water heaters directly capture the heat of the sunlight to heat up the water. The efficiency of solar hot water systems is 25%. While the efficiency is higher than PV solar panels, the main drawback of solar hot water heaters is that their short life of 5-7 years. The customers who install a solar water heater are faced with the cost of frequent re-installation.

◆ Longer design life of 25 years: Birds Eye Energy's water channel thickness is twice that of ordinary solar water panels, making it with stand high pressures. In addition, Birds Eye Energy's modules are manufactured using a superior and higher quality silver brazing; compared with coper brazing used in most solar water heaters. These aspects extend the design life of the product to 25 years, ensuring that your investment in a solar system serves you well for the longest possible time.

◆ Low maintenance: Ordinary solar water heaters require annual maintenance if the water quality is bad. Birds Eye Energy solar modules are designed with more number of flow passages; 12 (vs 9 for ordinary Solar water heater) and each flow passage has 16mm effective diameter (vs 12mm for ordinary solar water heater). These design features ensure that the impurities and hardness in water do not choke the flow for a long time. Thus, Birds Eye Energy modules can go upto 3 years without any need for maintenance.
